Blacka Moor

The Indian Society joined us for our task this week to Blacka Moor to do Birch Scrub clearing. Blacka Moor is the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust's largest nature reserve. The reserve has a mixture of habitats however our task was on heathland.

Heathlands are special man-made places as there are some animals who are only associated with these areas. The work we were doing was very worth-doing as by preventing birch (a pioneer species) from growing the land was stopped from becoming a woodland and the precious heathland was maintained and the internationally important species like heather that they contain.

For our task we walked to Ecclesall and then caught the bus to the site. We cut down and moved trees into habitat piles and made them neat so that people walking past don't complain. It was ok for us to work even though it was windy as the trees we were cutting were small. It was nice to have the Indian Society join us and thanks to the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust for having us.
